What are AEO and GEO, and are they different from SEO?
AEO means answer engine optimization, and GEO usually means generative engine optimization. Both describe efforts to improve how information is found, understood, and cited in AI-assisted answers. They are useful labels for a changing search experience, but they do not replace technical SEO, strong content, reputation, or customer value.
Why the new labels appeared
Search interfaces increasingly provide direct answers, summaries, comparisons, and follow-up exploration. Businesses want to understand how their information can participate in those experiences. AEO emphasizes concise answers and structured information. GEO emphasizes retrieval and citation by generative systems.
The labels can help teams discuss a real change in customer behavior. They become unhelpful when they are sold as secret disciplines disconnected from how the open web is crawled and evaluated.
What remains the same
Pages still need to be publicly accessible, indexable, technically clear, and relevant. Information still needs to be accurate, useful, original, and supported. The business still benefits from a recognizable identity, legitimate references, real customer proof, and consistent facts across trusted sources.
Google states that established SEO practices remain foundational for its generative search features. It also warns against unnecessary prompt variations and scaled content produced mainly to manipulate visibility.
What deserves greater emphasis
Lead with a direct answer, then explain context, exceptions, evidence, and action. Use descriptive headings, tables, lists, and examples when they help the reader. Publish first-hand methods and observations that generic summaries cannot replace. Make authorship and organizational responsibility visible.
Keep important entities consistent: company name, services, locations, people, products, policies, and contact details. Structured data can reinforce visible facts, but it should never describe content the user cannot see.
What to ignore
Do not expect an llms.txt file, artificial keyword chunks, hidden FAQs, manufactured brand mentions, or hundreds of prompt pages to create authority. Do not pay for guaranteed citations in systems nobody controls. These tactics distract from the pages and reputation customers actually evaluate.
Any AI-specific recommendation should survive one test: would this make the information more useful and trustworthy for a real visitor? If not, it is probably noise.
How to measure the opportunity
Monitor Search Console, analytics, referrals, brand demand, assisted conversions, and customer reports about where they discovered the business. AI interfaces expose limited reporting and change quickly, so avoid pretending the data is more precise than it is.
Use AEO and GEO as a lens inside a strong SEO and content program. Keep the business objective larger than the acronym.
Evaluate any AEO or GEO recommendation
Ask which system and customer behavior the recommendation addresses. Determine whether the tactic improves crawling, comprehension, evidence, reputation, or action. Request a clear mechanism and a way to measure the result. If the explanation depends on a secret file, mass publication, fake mentions, or guaranteed citations, reject it.
Separate platform-specific opportunities from durable infrastructure. A new search interface may reward a particular media type or business feed, but the company still needs accurate pages, consistent identity, useful content, and reliable transactions. Build the durable layer first, then test emerging features without risking the core experience.
Use one content brief for human and machine clarity. Define the direct answer, supporting evidence, original contribution, entity facts, related pages, sources, and customer action. This prevents separate AI content from becoming a duplicate, unmaintained archive.
- Does the tactic improve the real customer experience?
- Is it consistent with published platform guidance?
- Can the business maintain it accurately?
- What metric would show useful impact?
- What happens if the interface changes?

Where to go from here.
- Treat AEO and GEO as extensions of SEO
- Publish direct answers with original support
- Reject tactics that add no customer value
